Outdoor Safety Courses

Outdoor safety is the number one priority at Tuckamore Discoveries! To be safe in the outdoors, you really have to know how to navigate and how to survive if the unexpected happens. For this reason, Tuckamore Discoveries is offering short courses in Wilderness Survival and Map & Compass.  Each of these courses are eight hours in length and are designed to provide you with a solid foundation to build your expertise on.

Training Location and Schedule

 

Both Map and Compass and Wilderness Survival are taught outdoors. We supply the map, compass and some survival tools. Courses run from October until May.

 

Courses will be offered periodically throughout Fall - Spring.  Dates, times and locations for each course will be posted on our Facebook Page

Recommended Clothing and Supplies

 

Packed lunch for each day

Medium sized backpack

Fixed Blade Knife

Warm hat and gloves

Wool or Insulated Socks

Non-cotton outdoor pants

Non cotton shirt, sweater and fleece

Water and windproof Insulated jacket and Pants

Warm, waterproof and sturdy footwear (e.g. Baffin)

Extra socks, gloves and cap

Map and Compass

It's great to have a GPS, but if your battery fails or the signals are lost then you need to resort to basics.  Ideally, no one should go in the wilderness without a basic knowledge of how to use a map and compass.  It is reliable and it is easy! 

 

This one day course is designed to give you a solid introduction to map and compass using outdoor practical exercises. 

 

Course Length: Eight Hours

Cost: $35/Person

Minimum Participant Number: Five people per class.

Maximum Participant Number: 10 people per class.

Wilderness Survival

This course gives you the basic information you need to help you survive in an emergency situation in the outdoors.  The course covers the following topics:

Making a Survival Kit

Survival Psychology

Survival Priorities

Cold Injuries

Cold Water Immersion

Ice Rescue

Building Fires

Building Shelters

Signalling

Food and Water

Basic Navigation
